Moroccan Professor Clinches Silver at Silicon Valley Innovation Festival for Breast Cancer Detection Device

Professor Hassan Ammor, Director of the Technology Innovation Center at the Mohammedia School of Engineers, University Mohammed V in Rabat, has made history. He secured the silver medal at the prestigious Silicon Valley International Invention Festival (SVIIF) 2025, held in Santa Clara, California from August 8th to 10th. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone as he is the first Arab and African researcher to be recognized at this globally influential innovation event, a testament to the growing innovation prowess emerging from the African continent.

Groundbreaking Breast Cancer Detection Technology

Professor Ammor’s award-winning project, developed in partnership with Dr. Radouane Karli, is a significant step forward in medical technology. Their invention, “A New Smart Microwave Imaging Scanner for Breast Cancer Detection,” represents a breakthrough in early cancer diagnosis. The device is designed to be lightweight, compact, and, crucially, non-invasive. This innovative approach aims to provide a more accessible method for breast cancer detection. The project’s importance is amplified by the fact that breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality for women worldwide, highlighting the potential impact of this technology in improving global health outcomes, particularly within Africa where access to advanced medical technologies can be limited.

This achievement underscores the potential of African researchers to make significant contributions to global innovation. Professor Ammor’s recognition highlights not only his individual success, but also the growing research and development landscape within Morocco and the broader African continent. His work serves as an inspiration for aspiring innovators and demonstrates the crucial role of technology in addressing pressing global health challenges.
