Tunisia Cracks Down on Illegal Air Conditioners, Seizes Thousands
Tunisia recently conducted a major nationwide operation targeting the market for air conditioners, resulting in the seizure of thousands of non-compliant devices. Unveiling the Scope of the Operation
On August 15th, authorities, under the direction of the regional governors, mobilized fifty mixed teams comprising economic police, customs officials, representatives from the Ministry of the Interior, and the National Agency for Energy Management. The primary objective was to verify the legitimacy and compliance of air conditioning units offered for sale. The operation led to the removal of 3,295 air conditioners lacking required regulatory labels and an additional 86 units with unknown origins. Further investigations revealed 124 economic infractions and 22 customs violations. The Ministry of Commerce specified that the most prevalent issues included the absence of price displays, failure to declare business activities, a lack of proper invoicing, and the sale of non-compliant goods. The inspection teams scrutinized the origins of the products, verified the presence of energy efficiency labels, and checked for QR codes providing energy consumption data. They also ensured that the appliances met a minimum energy efficiency rating of 3. The overall goal of this campaign is to prevent the sale of illicit appliances from the parallel market.
