Investor Momentum Holds on Ghana Stock Exchange Despite Trading Slump
Despite a significant downturn in trading activity, the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) continued its positive trajectory on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. The benchmark equity index experienced further gains, highlighting sustained investor confidence even as daily turnover plummeted to its lowest levels in recent times. This resilience underscores a crucial moment for Ghana’s financial market, particularly in the context of growing African economies.
Market Performance and Trading Dynamics
The GSE Composite Index climbed 0.42%, settling at 7,443.29 points. This increase further solidified its year-to-date return, reaching an impressive 52.26%. Market capitalization also benefited, growing to GH¢151.46 billion. This growth was driven by positive performances from key players like GCB Bank, MTN Ghana, and Fan Milk. However, the trading volume experienced a dramatic downturn. Turnover plunged by 93.6% from the previous session, reaching a mere GH¢2.20 million. Correspondingly, trading volume also contracted by 93.2%, with only 589,225 shares changing hands. CAL Bank emerged as the most actively traded stock, with 228,091 shares traded, followed by MTN Ghana, which saw 219,189 shares change hands and a value of GH¢870,845. The financial sector overall remained relatively stable, with the GSE Financial Stock Index showing minimal change, hovering at 3,414.31 points, maintaining a year-to-date gain of 43.41%. However, there were some notable losers, including CAL Bank, which dropped 1.92% to GH¢0.51, and Unilever Ghana, which fell 0.44% to GH¢20.40. The Cedi also weakened slightly, trading at GH¢10.75 against the dollar on the interbank market.
The Bank of Ghana has approved credit scoring to strengthen institutions’ lending decisions, which is designed to promote greater financial inclusion in the country.
The Ghana Stock Exchange demonstrates a strong performance with the gains, which is indicative of the ongoing investor confidence.
