Why African Tech Companies Are Ditching Google for an Indian Rival

As African tech startups navigate a challenging economic climate, many are scrutinizing their operational expenses to ensure sustainability. For Nigerian edtech company Flexisaf, this internal audit led to a significant change in its technology stack. The company decided to move away from a long-term partner, Google, in a strategic effort to cut costs, signaling a growing trend among businesses on the continent to prioritize affordability in their software solutions.

Flexisaf’s Strategic Shift from Google to Zoho

Since 2010, Flexisaf had relied on Google Workspace for its suite of essential business tools, including Gmail, Drive, and Meet. However, as the company grew to 100 employees, the subscription fees for Google’s platform became a substantial financial burden. In search of a more cost-effective alternative, Flexisaf discovered Zoho, an Indian competitor offering a similar collection of productivity and collaboration products at a fraction of the cost. The company began its migration process in March, a move that is projected to deliver significant financial benefits.

Once the transition is complete, Flexisaf expects to save approximately 8,000,000 naira ($6,960) annually. This substantial saving highlights the compelling value proposition offered by emerging market players like Zoho. According to Sa’ad Shehu, Flexisaf’s people and talent manager, the company is implementing a phased rollout to ensure a smooth transition for its team.

“The approach we’ve taken is to introduce the mail and meeting tools first, and drive adoption of the other features within the coming months,” Shehu explained. This methodical approach minimizes disruption while allowing the company to quickly realize the cost benefits of the switch. Flexisaf’s decision underscores a key reality for many African startups: when faced with comparable functionality, price becomes a powerful differentiator, opening the door for lesser-known tech providers to gain a foothold in the market.
