Sam George Slams DStv’s Alleged Diplomatic Lobbying Against Rate Cuts

Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has accused pay-TV operator MultiChoice of attempting to escalate a domestic consumer pricing issue into a diplomatic affair. The minister has been a vocal advocate for a reduction in DStv’s subscription rates, asserting that he is determined to secure better value for Ghanaian customers. In a recent radio interview, he claimed the company is lobbying through diplomatic channels to halt his efforts, a tactic he has vowed will not succeed.

Diplomatic Pressure Over Consumer Prices

Speaking on Joy FM, Minister George detailed the alleged high-level lobbying by MultiChoice. He stated that the company was trying to involve foreign governments to sidestep direct negotiations on pricing. “For me, I am focused on ensuring that we get the best value for the Ghanaian people. They should come to the table,” he said. The minister specifically claimed that the South African Foreign Minister had been engaged to contact Ghana’s Foreign Minister regarding the matter. “All the places they are walking around, getting the foreign minister of South Africa to call the Ghanaian foreign minister to call me — it’s not going to work,” he affirmed. Mr. George also refuted any claims that his actions were motivated by sentiments against South African businesses, urging MultiChoice to negotiate in good faith.

The ongoing dispute underscores the minister’s firm resolve to prioritize the interests of Ghanaian consumers over corporate pressure. By publicly addressing the alleged diplomatic maneuvers, Samuel Nartey George has reinforced his position, signaling that he will continue to push for more affordable rates. The situation places the spotlight on MultiChoice to respond directly to the pricing concerns raised by the ministry, as the government remains steadfast in its demand for a fair deal for its citizens.
