Ghana’s Communication Minister Sam George Details MultiChoice Price Standoff Amidst Suspension Calls

Ghana’s Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has provided a comprehensive explanation regarding the ongoing dispute with MultiChoice, operators of the DStv satellite television service, concerning their pricing structure. Speaking on Joy FM on August 12, 2025, the Minister revealed that MultiChoice has consistently refused to review its subscription prices despite numerous engagements and official requests, leading to a potential regulatory showdown.

# Minister George’s Firm Stance on Price Reductions

Minister George emphasized that his insistence on MultiChoice reducing its prices is directly linked to the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and the current stability of the nation’s economy. He articulated that DStv had previously justified price hikes on the grounds of the cedi’s depreciation. Therefore, by the same logic, a reverse adjustment is expected now that the local currency has significantly appreciated. “I had made a request for 30%. If they did not do that, I was going to trigger the suspension. Thirty percent, nothing less. That’s my ask, 30%,” the Minister stated, underscoring the seriousness of his demand. He further elaborated on the rationale behind the specific 30% figure, noting that in April 2025, MultiChoice had increased its prices by 15% at a time when the cedi had already begun to show signs of appreciation. This historical context forms the basis of his current, more substantial demand for a price cut, aiming to ensure consumers benefit from improved economic conditions.

The impasse highlights the government’s commitment to protecting consumer interests and leveraging economic stability for direct benefits to citizens in the digital broadcasting sector. The Minister’s firm position indicates a readiness to take decisive regulatory action should MultiChoice fail to comply with the demand for a significant price reduction, reflecting a broader trend of increased governmental oversight in critical service industries across the African tech landscape.
