Tunisian Customs Seize Over 36 kg of Cannabis at La Goulette Port
Tunisia’s customs authorities at the La Goulette Nord port have made a significant drug bust, seizing a substantial quantity of cannabis hidden within a vehicle belonging to a Tunisian traveler residing abroad. The interception, highlighted in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, underscores ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking across the country’s borders, and particularly within import/export hubs. The case is being investigated by relevant security services.
Detailed Examination Leads to Discovery
The vehicle, subjected to standard customs procedures, initially underwent a scanner check. Suspicion was then raised, following an inspection by a canine unit, prompting a more thorough examination. Customs officers subsequently discovered a total of 360 cannabis plates, weighing a combined 36,170 grams (over 36 kilograms). The precise location within the vehicle where the drugs were concealed was not specified in the original announcement.
The bust demonstrates the critical role of modern technology, like scanner inspections and trained sniffer dogs, in enhancing the effectiveness of customs operations. This technology combined with skilled customs agents helps to combat the smuggling of illegal substances.
A seizure report was compiled, and the case was referred to the public prosecutor’s office. Following consultation with the prosecutor, the matter was handed over to the appropriate security services, to begin the ongoing investigation into the source and destination of the illicit cargo.
