MTN Uganda Navigates Tax Challenges Despite Subscriber Growth in H1 2025

MTN Uganda, a key player in Uganda’s booming telecommunications sector, recently released its financial results for the first half of 2025, revealing a mixed bag of results. While the company experienced significant subscriber growth, its profit after tax (PAT) took a hit due to unforeseen tax obligations. This performance reflects the challenges faced by telecom operators in navigating regulatory landscapes and ensuring sustainable growth within the competitive African market.

Navigating Tax Hurdles and Expanding Subscriber Base

The telecom giant reported a 9.7% year-on-year decrease in profit after tax, settling at Ush 267 billion. This decline was primarily attributed to a substantial 115% increase in tax payments, totaling Ush 110.9 billion. This tax burden stemmed from a one-off settlement following an assessment by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) related to a transfer pricing audit, covering the period from 2012 to 2024. This tax impact also consequently led to a decrease in profit margin by 3.9 percentage points, settling at 15.5%. However, on a more positive note, MTN Uganda witnessed strong subscriber growth, with its customer base expanding by 10.2% to reach 22.8 million during the same period. The adjusted profit after tax, which excludes the impact of the one-off tax settlement, increased by 27.8% to Ush 295.7 billion, signaling underlying business health. Furthermore, the company’s total revenue for the first six months of the year grew by 13.19% year-on-year, reaching Ush 1.72 trillion.

In conclusion, MTN Uganda’s H1 2025 results highlight the complex interplay between operational performance, regulatory compliance, and overall profitability in the Ugandan telecoms market. Despite the setback caused by the unexpected tax settlement, the company’s strong subscriber growth and revenue increase underscore its resilience and continued potential within Uganda’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. This situation also highlights the importance of proactive tax planning and financial management for telecom companies operating in Africa.
