FNB and Home Affairs Streamline Smart ID & Passport Services for South Africans
First National Bank (FNB) has further strengthened its partnership with South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs (DHA), significantly improving access to crucial identification documents. This expansion allows for the reissuance of Smart IDs and passports through the user-friendly FNB Banking App and across its extensive branch network, providing a convenient and efficient service for all South Africans. This collaboration is a testament to the growing trend of public-private partnerships enhancing service delivery within the African tech landscape.
Successful Partnership Fuels Expanded Services
The initial collaboration, which commenced in 2015, has already demonstrated substantial success. Through its seven participating branches, FNB has facilitated the issuance of over 570,000 Smart IDs and passports. This includes a remarkable 312,000 Smart IDs and 258,000 passports, highlighting the significant impact of the initiative. FNB CEO, Harry Kellan, emphasized the importance of these documents for South Africans, stating their necessity for essential services, employment, banking, and travel. Kellan also highlighted the bank’s commitment to innovation, its support for the DHA’s modernization efforts, and the ability to reach a broad audience through FNB’s robust infrastructure. This expansion underscores the potential for technology to bridge gaps and improve access to essential government services.
