Africa’s Solar Surge: Reaching 20 GW Milestone and Poised for Record Growth

Africa has achieved a significant clean energy landmark, surpassing 20 gigawatt-peak (GWp) in installed solar power capacity. This monumental achievement, confirmed by the Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA), signals a powerful surge in the continent’s renewable energy transition. With an additional 10 GWp of new capacity already under construction, Africa is demonstrating remarkable momentum, setting the stage for unprecedented growth in its solar energy landscape. This expansion is crucial for meeting the continent’s rising energy demands and fostering sustainable development across various African economies.

The Metrics Driving Africa’s Solar Ascent

The impressive figures underscore Africa’s rapid adoption of solar technology. As of the first half of 2025, the continent boasts over 20 GWp of total installed solar capacity, with a substantial 10+ GWp actively under construction. This robust pipeline highlights the accelerating pace of solar project deployment. AFSIA’s extensive database tracks more than 40,000 solar projects, illustrating the sheer volume and widespread nature of solar development across the continent. Leading this renewable revolution is South Africa, which accounts for approximately half of Africa’s total installed solar capacity, demonstrating its commitment to green energy. North Africa’s prominent players – Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia – also feature among the continent’s top four solar nations. In 2025, Southern Africa emerged as a key driver of new capacity, with Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia significantly contributing to the region’s solar expansion alongside South Africa. Further north, Senegal has notably distinguished itself in West Africa’s burgeoning solar sector.

This pivotal 20 GW solar milestone not only positions Africa as a burgeoning hub for renewable energy but also underscores its potential to lead in the global energy transition. The substantial pipeline of projects currently underway suggests that the continent is on track for continued exponential growth in solar power. This commitment to harnessing its vast solar resources promises a brighter, cleaner, and more energy-secure future for Africa, fostering economic resilience and sustainability across its diverse nations.
