Study Reveals Morocco’s Local ‘Beldiya’ Cannabis Variety Exhibits Remarkable Chemical Stability

A recent landmark study by Moroccan university researchers has unveiled a significant finding about the local “Beldiya” cannabis cultivar: it possesses exceptional chemical stability when compared to non-native varieties cultivated in northern Morocco. This discovery positions Beldiya as a uniquely robust strain, potentially influencing future agricultural and scientific endeavors.

# Unpacking the Scientific Insights into Beldiya’s Resilience

Published in the esteemed journal Food Chemistry Advances, this pioneering research meticulously analyzed five different Cannabis sativa L. cultivars over three consecutive growing seasons, spanning from 2014 to 2016. The cultivation site for these samples was located in the Bab Taza region, close to Morocco’s Chefchaouen province. To precisely assess the chemical variability within the phytocannabinoid compounds, scientists employed sophisticated analytical techniques, specifically liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry coupled with a triple-stage quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC-MS/TSQ Endura). Lead researcher Ismail El Bakali, alongside his colleagues from various Moroccan institutions, successfully identified a total of 13 distinct cannabinoid compounds across all the analyzed samples. Among these, five major cannabinoids were found in substantial concentrations, each exceeding 5%: THCA-A, CBDA, CBD, Δ⁹-THC, and CBN. The study’s core revelation underscores Beldiya’s inherent ability to maintain a consistent chemical profile, marking it as a cultivar of superior stability relative to its exotic counterparts. This resilience suggests an adaptability and inherent quality that sets it apart within the regional cannabis landscape.

This Moroccan-led research highlights the importance of preserving and understanding indigenous plant varieties. Beldiya’s demonstrated chemical stability not only provides valuable scientific data but also points to the potential for this local cultivar to offer unique advantages for research and development within the agricultural and biochemical sectors, showcasing significant scientific contribution from African institutions.
