Nigeria is on the cusp of a digital revolution with the unveiling of Project Bridge, an ambitious initiative set to deploy a sprawling 90,000-kilometre fibre optic backbone. Expanding Nigeria’s Digital Horizons
The high-level technical design of Project Bridge was recently announced in Lagos by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. He emphasized that this represents the country’s most ambitious digital infrastructure endeavour to date. Currently, Nigeria boasts approximately 35,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables. Project Bridge will expand this existing network significantly, bringing the total length to an impressive 125,000 kilometres. This expansion will solidify Nigeria’s position, making its fibre backbone the third largest in Africa, surpassed only by Egypt and South Africa. This crucial initiative is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan (2020-2025), which aims to boost internet penetration to 70% nationwide by 2025, with an even more ambitious target of 80% for underserved areas, truly bridging the digital divide across the nation.
