Powering Progress: LEAF Project Identifies Renewable Energy Hotspots Across Ghana
The LEAF Ghana Project is spearheading a transformative nationwide assessment aimed at pinpointing communities most suitable for Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) installations. This vital initiative seeks to significantly enhance access to clean, reliable power, particularly in Ghana’s underserved regions, fostering sustainable development and improving lives.
At a recent stakeholder engagement held on August 7, 2025, Francis Adarkwah, the Project Coordinator, shed light on the strategic focus of the ongoing assessment. The project is meticulously mapping “hotspot” locations where the integration of renewable energy solutions, such as solar power and other clean technologies, promises the most profound impact. This includes areas where improved energy access can directly enhance critical essential services, including access to clean water, functional health facilities, and quality educational opportunities. Importantly, the LEAF Project is designed with an inclusive approach, actively considering gender-specific needs and ensuring that women and other vulnerable groups are direct beneficiaries of the clean energy rollout. Mr. Adarkwah also underscored the pivotal role of renewable energy technology in Ghana’s agricultural sector. He emphasized the necessity of factoring in agroecological zones when planning technological interventions, ensuring that clean energy solutions are tailored to specific agricultural contexts for maximum efficiency and benefit.
The LEAF Ghana Project’s comprehensive approach to identifying and prioritizing renewable energy hotspots is a critical step towards closing the energy access gap in the country. By strategically deploying DRE solutions and considering both community needs and agricultural implications, the project is set to empower numerous underserved areas, driving economic growth and enhancing the overall well-being of Ghanaians through sustainable and reliable clean power.
