UGTT Headquarters Under Siege: Sami Tahri Explains the Events
Tensions flared at the headquarters of the Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT) on Thursday, August 7, 2025, when approximately one hundred individuals attempted to forcefully enter the building. According to a statement released on the UGTT’s official page and corroborated by spokesperson Sami Tahri in an interview with the TAP news agency, the group included “children and homeless people.”
Tahri Condemns the “Aggression”
Union members present at the scene formed a human barrier to prevent the forced entry. Sami Tahri, the Deputy Secretary-General in charge of communication, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an “aggression.” He held the authorities responsible for allowing the event to unfold, pointing to a worrying trend of escalating threats against the union. Tahri highlighted that following a recent strike in the transportation sector, social media platforms were rife with calls for attacks on UGTT premises and the expulsion of its leaders. Furthermore, some online messages advocated for the dissolution of the powerful labor organization, rhetoric that Tahri believes culminated in the gathering of protesters at the UGTT headquarters.
The incident raises serious concerns about the safety and security of union members and the increasing hostility towards the UGTT in Tunisia. It remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to these accusations and what measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
