Vietnam’s Unlikely Innovator: A Military-Led Tech Revolution
Vietnam is experiencing a surge in technological innovation, and surprisingly, a significant driver is the nation’s military. Viettel Post, a postal and courier service under the Ministry of National Defence, is spearheading advancements in automation and logistics. This unexpected role highlights a strategic shift towards leveraging military resources for civilian technological development.
Viettel Post’s Robotic Revolution
In a Hanoi warehouse, a fleet of approximately 200 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) is transforming package handling. These beetle-shaped robots efficiently navigate the facility, sorting and dispatching thousands of packages for e-commerce giants like Shopee and TikTok Shop. Introduced in January 2024 by Viettel Post, these AGVs operate with minimal human intervention, using QR code scanners to identify package destinations and route them accordingly. Bui Quang Trung, the 26-year-old operations head at Viettel Post’s technology department, emphasizes that the robots’ software was developed entirely in-house. This showcases the company’s commitment to technological self-sufficiency and innovation. While the Vietnamese context might differ from the African tech landscape, the principle of government entities driving technological advancements resonates across developing economies.
