From comedians on TikTok in Gonder to educational YouTubers in Hawassa and stylists showcasing their work on Instagram in Addis Ababa, the creative landscape is rapidly transforming. However, despite increasing internet and mobile penetration, Ethiopian digital creators are largely excluded from the global digital economy and its potential for financial returns.
Barriers to Digital Monetization
The challenges faced by Ethiopian digital creators are not due to a lack of talent or content creation. Instead, they stem from structural barriers that prevent them from accessing monetization programs offered by major platforms like YouTube, Meta, and TikTok. While creators in neighboring African countries such as Kenya and Nigeria benefit from these programs, Ethiopian creators are systematically denied access. Despite their visibility, popularity, and influence, the vast majority of Ethiopian digital creators are not being paid for their work. The online population in Ethiopia reached 28.6 million in early 2025, driven by mobile access and a content-focused youth demographic. Over 8.3 million social media accounts are active in the country, representing a significant audience and a vibrant creator ecosystem. The growth of internet penetration, beginning at 16.7%, has further fueled this digital expansion.

While Ethiopian creators are actively building communities and shaping online trends, their exclusion from global monetization programs prevents them from participating fully in the digital economy and hinders their ability to monetize their creativity.
