Tamale Power Grid Stabilized After NEDCo and VRA Staff Action
The city of Tamale and neighboring areas in Ghana have regained full electricity supply after a temporary outage caused by a service withdrawal from the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) staff. This critical update, released on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, signals a return to normalcy for residents and businesses, impacting the Northern Region, an area where dependable power is vital for socio-economic growth, particularly within the growing tech and innovation sector.
Minister’s Intervention and Stakeholder Meetings
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition responded swiftly to the power disruption. Minister John Abdulai Jinapor (MP) initiated an urgent working visit to address the situation directly. His intervention involved high-level discussions with a wide array of stakeholders to negotiate a resolution. These meetings included the Northern Regional Minister, the Mayor of Tamale, NEDCo management, leaders from the Senior Staff Association and Workers’ Unions of NEDCo and VRA, as well as representatives from the Ghana Police Service and National Security. Minister Jinapor also engaged with traditional leaders, including the Gukpenaa, Kuga Naa, and Gbewaa Palaces, to understand their perspectives and foster a collaborative approach to restoring power. The focus was to bring the city’s power distribution to its normal stage, preventing further economic losses and social unrest.
The rapid resolution of the power outage demonstrates the importance of proactive government engagement and effective stakeholder collaboration. The restoration of power to Tamale is a positive step for Ghana’s Northern Region and an important example of problem-solving in the energy sector.
