NIA Disconnects GRA from Verification System Over Massive Debt
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has severed the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) access to its Identity Verification Service (IVS) due to an outstanding debt exceeding GH¢376 million. The NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Darlas, expressed disappointment that the GRA has not addressed the debt despite numerous attempts to reach a resolution or establish a payment plan.
Identity Verification Services Disrupted
The disconnection, effective August 5, 2025, impacts the GRA’s ability to verify individuals’ identities using the Ghana Card in real-time through the IVS platform. This shutdown raises concerns about potential disruptions to services that rely on the IVS for essential identification checks. The NIA emphasized that this action was taken only after exhausting all other avenues to recover the substantial debt.
The NIA’s decision highlights the challenges of inter-agency financial obligations within the Ghanaian government and the potential ramifications for service delivery when these debts remain unresolved. The disconnection of the GRA from the IVS underscores the critical role of the NIA’s platform in various sectors and the need for government bodies to prioritize settling their financial commitments to maintain seamless operations.
