EU Approves Medlink Project Linking Algeria and Italy
The European Commission announced on July 29, 2025, the inclusion of the Medlink Renewable Generation – MedGen project on the list of priority cross-border renewable energy projects. This significant step allows Medlink to apply for European financial support under the Connecting Europe Facility. This project holds particular importance for North Africa, potentially fostering significant growth in the renewable energy sector and facilitating the export of green energy to Europe.
Medlink: Powering Europe with North African Renewables
The Medlink project aims to establish an electrical connection between Algeria and Italy, traversing through Tunisia, using a high-voltage submarine cable with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts. Crucially, the plan also incorporates the deployment of approximately 10 GW of solar, onshore wind, and battery storage capacity within Algeria and Tunisia. This substantial renewable energy generation will serve to cover a portion of the local energy consumption and enable the export of green electricity to the European Union, contributing to Europe’s renewable energy targets and energy security. The project was first proposed in May 2022 by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during his state visit to Italy, underlining its strategic importance to both nations.
