Akosombo Communities Demand Fair Electricity Charges, Petition Energy Minister

Residents from six communities in the Akosombo area of Ghana are calling for intervention from the Minister of Energy and Green Transition to address a dispute with the Volta River Authority (VRA) regarding electricity charges. A formal petition, dated July 30, 2025, signed by local leaders and residents, outlines their concerns over excessive service fees and substantial accumulated electricity debt. This situation highlights the need for transparent and accurate metering in the context of Africa’s evolving energy landscape.

Faulty Meters and Unfair Billing Practices

The core issue, as detailed in the petition, stems from the installation of electricity meters by VRA that residents claim were “not calibrated” properly. This alleged malfunction is the primary cause of the communities’ grievances. The petition alleges that these faulty meters resulted in unusually high electricity bills for individual accounts. This issue led to public protests, signifying the communities’ discontent with the billing system. The communities involved include Akosombo, New Powmu, Mangoase, Afabeng, Ankyease, and Ghanakpe. The residents seek accountability from VRA and a resolution to what they consider unfair billing practices.

The communities are hoping for a favorable resolution from the Ministry of Energy to address their concerns about the VRA’s billing practices.
