DVLA to Introduce e-Licence: Driving Ghana’s Digital Transformation
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Ghana is set to enhance its digital services with the introduction of an electronic licensing system, or e-licence. This initiative, announced by DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey, marks a significant step in the authority’s digital transformation journey and aims to modernize the process of driver’s license verification.
Benefits of the e-Licence System for Ghanaian Drivers
The primary advantage of the e-licence is to provide drivers with convenient access to their licensing information. This is particularly useful during traffic stops by law enforcement officers. Drivers can access their information online, eliminating the need to always carry the physical driver’s license card. Kotey highlighted this benefit during the launch of the DVLA Lorry Terminal Project at the Circle-Kaneshie Station on August 5, 2025. He emphasized that drivers should not be penalized for not having their physical licenses with them. The e-licence, envisioned as an app, will allow drivers to prove their licensing status readily. It is important to note that the e-licence is designed to supplement the physical driver’s license, not replace it. The DVLA will continue to issue physical license cards alongside the new electronic option, offering drivers a choice in how they manage their licensing information. This development reflects the growing trend of digital transformation within African government services, streamlining processes and improving efficiency.
This move represents a forward-thinking approach to improving service delivery and driver convenience in Ghana.
