Starlink Launches in Somalia, Ushering in a New Era of Internet Access
SpaceX, spearheaded by Elon Musk, has officially activated its Starlink internet service in Somalia. This deployment of high-speed, low-latency internet marks a pivotal moment for Somalia, an African nation grappling with limited internet connectivity, particularly in its rural and often neglected areas. The launch, communicated through a post on X and accompanied by a detailed availability map, signifies a tangible effort to bridge the digital divide.
Expanding Connectivity Across Somalia
The Starlink availability map showcases Somalia as fully “available,” meaning service is accessible across the country, including key urban centers such as Hargeisa, Bosaso, and Mogadishu. This comprehensive rollout encompasses both rural and coastal regions, promising to bring connectivity to previously underserved populations. This rapid implementation follows the granting of a 10-year license to SpaceX by Somalia’s National Communications Authority (NCA) in April. Technology Minister Mohamed Adam Moalim Ali voiced his support, highlighting Starlink as a vital step towards providing affordable internet for all Somalis. This expansion is particularly significant in an African context, where affordable and reliable internet access remains a significant challenge.
