Four Deaths in Protection Civile Plane Crash in Algeria

A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, August 5th, resulting in the loss of four lives in a plane crash at Ferhat Abbas Airport in Jijel, Algeria. The aircraft involved was a reconnaissance plane belonging to the Protection Civile, the country’s civil protection service. The incident has sent shockwaves through the emergency services community, underscoring the inherent risks associated with aerial operations, and highlighting the need for robust safety protocols in the African context.

Details of the Incident and Victims

The Protection Civile issued a statement late in the day, revealing that the plane, a Zlín model, crashed during a training exercise. The crew comprised a trainee pilot and three experienced pilots. Sadly, all four occupants perished in the crash while “carrying out their professional duties,” according to the DGPC. The victims have been identified as Lieutenant-Colonel Berdji Redouane, commander of the Protection Civile’s air unit; Captain Ghalay Souhaib, the trainee pilot; an instructor from the flight school; and a Chilean national who was a senior officer within Air Tractor. The DGPC refrained from releasing information about the causes or circumstances of the accident at the time. The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in emergency response roles, and their importance within society and within African countries like Algeria.

The Director-General of the Protection Civile, Colonel Boualem Boughlef, expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and promised a thorough investigation into the crash. The incident highlights the challenges faced by the Protection Civile and other emergency services organizations across Africa, particularly in securing adequate safety resources and training for their personnel.
