MTN Ghana’s Profit Victory Over MTN Nigeria Shakes Telecom Industry

In a surprising turn of events, MTN Ghana has outpaced its Nigerian counterpart in profitability, generating $56 million more in profit. This achievement highlights a significant shift in the competitive landscape of the African telecommunications industry, particularly given Nigeria’s substantially larger subscriber base. The news has sent ripples through the sector, prompting industry analysts to dissect the factors driving this unexpected outcome.

Factors Driving MTN Ghana’s Success

According to recent figures released by MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett on LinkedIn, the Ghanaian arm of the telecom giant reported a profit after tax of ₵3.6 billion, equivalent to approximately $327 million, for the first half of 2025. In contrast, MTN Nigeria recorded a profit after tax of ₦414.9 billion, which translates to roughly $271 million for the same period. This financial performance solidifies MTN Ghana’s position as a top performer within the MTN group, illustrating how effective strategies can flourish even in smaller markets. The strength of Ghana’s economy, reflected in the relative stability of the cedi and its impact on profitability, seems to be a key contributing factor to this achievement.

The unexpected profitability highlights how smaller markets can sometimes deliver greater returns due to a range of economic dynamics. This data provides a valuable case study for other African telecom operators, emphasizing the importance of adapting strategies to local market conditions to maximize shareholder value.
