Latin America Builds AI to Rival ChatGPT

Fed Up with ChatGPT, Latin America Pioneers Its Own AI

In the bustling city of Santiago, Chile, graphic designer Juan Palma encountered a frustrating reality: ChatGPT, a leading generative artificial-intelligence model, provided completely incorrect directions to a local subway station. This experience highlighted a common issue – the limitations of large language models like ChatGPT and Meta’s Llama in understanding and accurately processing information specific to Latin American dialects and local contexts. Palma’s surprise at the chatbot’s mistake underscores the region’s growing awareness of these AI inaccuracies.

Latam-G: A Regional Solution

Recognizing the shortcomings of relying on AI models trained primarily on data from other regions, over 30 Latin American institutions have collaborated for the past two years on developing Latam-G. This project aims to create a localized AI solution designed to overcome the inaccuracies and “hallucinations” – AI-generated fabrications – that often plague existing models when handling Latin American languages, dialects, and regional nuances. This initiative reflects a broader trend, mirroring similar efforts by African nations working on developing local AI models for their own languages and cultural contexts.

In essence, the initiative addresses the need for AI tools that are both accurate and culturally relevant, ensuring the technology serves its intended purpose effectively within the Latin American context.
