Combating Illegal Mining: A Multi-Pronged Approach
Illegal mining, a persistent challenge in Ghana, requires a comprehensive and multifaceted strategy to effectively address it. According to Prof. Jerry S. Y. Kuma, Advisor to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, eradicating this illicit activity demands a coordinated effort involving multiple sectors and addressing the issue from various angles. His remarks came during a stakeholder engagement in Ho, bringing together the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, the Minerals Commission, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
Government’s Intervention Strategies
The government is implementing several interventions to curb illegal mining. A crucial strategy involves reevaluating mining license regulations to strengthen oversight and ensure compliance. This will be reinforced by robust enforcement measures and enhanced management of mining equipment, particularly excavators, which are often used in unauthorized operations. To facilitate this, the government plans to track all excavators nationwide. The installation of tracking devices will allow real-time monitoring of their movements, especially to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive areas like forest reserves. A national control room has been established at the Minerals Commission. This technological approach leverages African tech advancements, like satellite tracking and remote monitoring systems, to enhance resource management and environmental protection.

In conclusion, the fight against illegal mining requires a strategic and coordinated approach. By implementing stricter regulatory measures, utilizing technology for equipment tracking, and fostering collaborative efforts between different stakeholders, Ghana aims to combat this menace and protect its natural resources.
