GMet Urges Collaboration for Enhanced Marine Safety in Ghana
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) is calling for a concerted effort from all players in Ghana’s fishing and maritime industries to improve safety at sea. Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, the Deputy Director-General of Operations at GMet, underscored the critical need for stakeholders to heed marine weather warnings and work closely with the agency. This call for action comes as GMet continues its efforts to refine its marine weather forecasting and communication strategies within the context of Ghana’s coastal communities.
Strengthening the Marine Weather Forecasting Ecosystem
Dr. Williams made these remarks during the opening of a marine forecasting stakeholder engagement held at the University of Cape Coast. He highlighted that the reliability of marine forecasts relies not only on GMet’s ability to provide accurate information but also on the willingness of end-users, specifically fishers and boat operators, to actively use the weather warnings. This collaboration is seen as vital, especially considering the impact of technology on African maritime sectors. The workshop in Cape Coast forms part of an ongoing initiative by GMet to gather insights into how marine weather data is received, understood, and utilized within coastal communities across Ghana. Following a previous engagement in Keta, this workshop aims to facilitate a better understanding of current practices and to streamline weather information dissemination to improve the safety of fishermen and mariners.
The data collection and analysis of this engagement will serve to strengthen the accuracy of future forecasting and the effectiveness of their maritime advisories.
In conclusion, GMet’s appeal for collaborative action underscores the need for a proactive approach to marine safety. By integrating the weather forecasts, educating fishers, and boat operators and working together, Ghana can significantly reduce risks and improve the overall safety for all people at sea.
