Ghana Halts Uncontracted Payments for ghana.gov Platform Under Previous Administration

In a concerning development within Ghana’s digital landscape, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that the current government has ceased payments to companies related to the ghana.gov platform due to the absence of formal contracts under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. This revelation highlights potential irregularities in the management of public funds and raises questions about transparency and accountability in the utilization of taxpayer money for crucial digital infrastructure.

Uncontracted Payments Exposed: Millions Disbursed Monthly

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on August 1, 2025, Minister George stated that significant monthly payments, amounting to tens of millions of Ghana cedis, were made to various companies involved with the ghana.gov platform without the existence of legally binding contracts. This practice was implemented during the tenure of former President Akufo-Addo. The current government, under President Mahama, has since halted all payments related to the platform. The move underscores the new administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and ensuring that public funds are disbursed in a transparent and legally compliant manner. This situation emphasizes the need for robust procurement processes and meticulous oversight in the deployment of digital services, a critical element in Africa’s technological advancement.
