Ghana Calls for Fairer DStv Pricing: Parity with Nigeria and Liberia

The Ghanaian Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, is advocating for equitable pricing of DStv subscription packages across African nations, particularly highlighting the disparity between Ghana, Nigeria, and Liberia. His statement emphasizes that Ghanaians are burdened with significantly higher costs for the same content compared to their neighbors, sparking a conversation about fair treatment and consumer rights within the African digital landscape.

Pricing Disparity: A Call for Equity

Minister George has brought to light a stark contrast in DStv subscription fees across different African countries. He pointed out that the premium bouquet package, priced around $83 in Ghana, is available in Nigeria for a mere $29. Adding to the argument, he cited a price reduction on premium packages in Liberia, which was implemented in June of the previous year, despite that country’s prices being similar to Ghana’s at the time. In Liberia, these premium packages saw a $30 price cut, and lower-tier bundles were reduced by $17. During the Government Accountability Series held in Accra on Friday, August 1, 2025, Minister George used the comparison to advocate for a more equitable pricing structure for Ghanaian consumers, emphasizing the importance of fair market practices within the continent’s digital entertainment sector. He is calling for the same benefits for Ghanaian consumers, especially when similar benefits are offered to Liberian and Nigerian consumers.

The Minister’s call for fair pricing underscores the need for greater consumer protection and transparency within the African digital market. The disparity in prices raises questions about market strategies and whether these strategies benefit all African consumers equally. The focus now is to negotiate with MultiChoice on behalf of the citizens of Ghana.
