Moroccan AI Pioneer Calls for Muslim Leadership in Artificial Intelligence

Ibtihal Aboussad, a Moroccan AI engineer, is urging Muslim communities worldwide to actively engage in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. Speaking at the Muslim Council of Britain, she emphasized the crucial need for Muslims to take a leading role in shaping and understanding AI technologies, as these technologies become increasingly integrated into everyday life. This call to action is particularly pertinent in the context of global technological advancements and the potential impact of AI on various sectors.

The Urgency of Muslim Involvement in AI Development

Aboussad highlighted the necessity for Muslims to avoid being passive observers in the AI revolution. Drawing a parallel to the rise of social media in the early 2010s, she noted that many Muslim individuals and institutions were unprepared, leading to external forces influencing the thoughts and perspectives of Muslim youth. She stressed that AI’s ubiquity demands active participation, as it is already influencing crucial areas like healthcare, education, and governance. Furthermore, Aboussad pointed to the concerning application of AI in conflict, citing the situation in Palestine as a distressing example of how technology is being used in modern warfare. This underscores the importance of developing AI tools and training programs to protect vulnerable communities and promote ethical AI practices. This is especially important in Africa, where the benefits of AI are beginning to be realized but where there are still serious concerns about equitable distribution and ethical considerations.
