Tunisia Accelerates its Automotive Smart City Project

Tunisia is moving swiftly to realize its ambitious “Automotive Smart City” project, a dedicated urban development poised to become a hub for the automotive industry. This significant undertaking aims to bolster the nation’s industrial landscape and attract substantial foreign direct investment. The commitment to this innovative venture was recently underscored during the third steering committee meeting, held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, where key stakeholders convened to drive the project forward.

Strategic Push Amidst Surging Investment Demands

During her leadership of the steering committee, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, Tunisia’s Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, issued a clear directive to intensify efforts and bolster coordination among all participating entities. This urgent call is primarily motivated by a significant surge in investment inquiries directed at Tunisia’s burgeoning automotive manufacturing and components sector. The “Automotive Smart City” is envisioned as a strategic response, providing a cutting-edge environment designed to meet these growing demands and position Tunisia as a premier destination for automotive innovation in the African region. The collaborative spirit essential for such a complex undertaking was evident in the meeting’s diverse attendance. Key figures present included Afef Chechi Tlayari, the Minister’s Chief of Staff, and Mariem Loumi, President of the Tunisian Association of Automotive Component Manufacturers, highlighting vital private sector engagement. Furthermore, representatives from numerous governmental bodies, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economy, Commerce, Vocational Training, Employment, and Migration, participated, emphasizing a holistic, cross-ministerial approach. Representatives from GIZ also attended, signifying international partnership in this transformative project. This broad participation underscores the national importance and comprehensive strategy behind developing a modern, integrated ecosystem for automotive production.

The expedited progression of the Automotive Smart City project signifies Tunisia’s dedication to fostering economic growth and technological advancement. By establishing a specialized, intelligent urban center, the nation is poised to enhance its industrial capacity, create new employment opportunities, and solidify its position as a competitive player in the global automotive supply chain. This strategic initiative reflects Tunisia’s ambition to leverage smart city concepts for industrial development, setting a precedent for tech-driven economic diversification in the African continent. The collaborative efforts of all stakeholders will be crucial in transforming this vision into a tangible reality, driving sustainable growth for the future.
