From ‘Sapa’ to Web3 Enthusiasm: Hanif Olayiwola’s Journey into the Digital Frontier

At a remarkable 17 years old, Hanif Olayiwola has already carved out a distinct identity for himself as a Web3 enthusiast, content writer, and frontend developer. His primary aspiration is to illuminate the complexities of Web3 for a broader audience, a mission he articulates with conviction whenever he introduces himself. Hanif’s path into the tech world, however, is far from typical, shaped by formative experiences and the unexpected push of economic adversity.

The Genesis of a Web3 Enthusiast: A Path Paved by ‘Sapa’

Hanif describes his initial foray into technology as intricate. He concluded his secondary education exceptionally early, at just 14, leaving him at a crossroads, uncertain about his life’s direction. His first steps toward acquiring digital skills were humble, utilizing his mother’s phone for learning. An early attempt at formal training came when his mother invested ₦1,000 in a copywriting class. Yet, Hanif admits he lacked the necessary commitment at the time, leading him to abandon both copywriting and SEO studies. Prior to his tech pursuits, Hanif also explored a diverse array of practical vocations. Between 2019 and 2020, he engaged in fashion designing, adding this to a skillset that encompassed hair styling, barbing, and even mechanic work. These were, as he puts it, the common competencies often cultivated by those navigating the “school of hard knocks” in their quest for self-sufficiency. A pivotal moment, however, arrived in 2021 with the onset of “sapa,” a Nigerian colloquialism for severe financial hardship or being broke. This profound economic strain served as a stark awakening. Hanif vividly recalls, “Sapa came, and I was broke,” highlighting how this critical juncture compelled him to adopt a serious approach to his future, diligently seeking employment and setting the stage for his eventual deep dive into the digital economy, ultimately propelling him towards championing Web3.

Hanif Olayiwola’s inspiring progression from youthful uncertainty and a diverse background in vocational skills to a fervent Web3 advocate truly embodies resilience. The challenging encounter with “sapa” served as a powerful catalyst, fundamentally altering his perspective on learning and career development. Now, at 17, his unique journey, combined with that transformative period of hardship, fuels his dedication to educating others and shaping the future of Web3 within the dynamic African tech landscape.
