SSNIT’s Ambitious Plan to Eradicate Extreme Poverty Among Ghanaian Pensioners
The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in Ghana has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at significantly improving the lives of its beneficiaries. Director General Kwesi Afreh Biney recently declared SSNIT’s commitment to ensuring that every pensioner under its scheme receives at least $2.15 per day, a crucial benchmark aligned with the World Bank’s extreme poverty threshold. This bold move underscores SSNIT’s dedication to guaranteeing that all individuals relying on the scheme are lifted above the poverty line, securing a more dignified standard of living in their retirement years.
Bolstering Financial Stability and Healthcare Access for Ghanaian Retirees
Announced during the 2025 Pensioners’ Engagement in Kumasi, Director General Biney articulated a firm pledge to fully implement this financial upliftment goal before the conclusion of his tenure. This commitment goes beyond merely fulfilling basic pension responsibilities, striving to provide a robust safety net for Ghana’s elderly population. Recognizing that financial security is just one aspect of well-being, SSNIT is also pioneering a vital healthcare support program. In collaboration with the Trust Hospital and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), a new initiative is being developed to connect pensioners, particularly those residing in remote regions, with healthcare professionals via phone. This innovative approach aims to deliver essential medical advice and support, bridging geographical gaps in access to care. Biney emphasized this holistic vision, stating, “The payment of pensions is only a basic responsibility. We must go beyond that.” highlighting SSNIT’s evolving role from a mere financial provider to a comprehensive support system for Ghana’s retirees.
This comprehensive strategy from SSNIT marks a pivotal moment in social security provision in Ghana. By directly addressing both the financial vulnerability and healthcare needs of its pensioners, SSNIT is setting a new standard for retiree welfare. This dual-pronged approach reflects a deep understanding of the challenges faced by older citizens and a proactive commitment to fostering a secure and healthy retirement for all beneficiaries, ensuring that no pensioner is left behind.
