MTN MoMo CEO Bradwin Roper Steps Down to Pursue New Venture
Bradwin Roper has resigned from his position as CEO of MTN’s mobile money platform, MoMo, effective at the end of October 2024. This announcement marks the end of his tenure within the company, opening a path for Roper to explore a new opportunity. The news signifies a shift in leadership for the rapidly evolving fintech division of MTN, a prominent player in the African mobile money landscape.
Roper’s Impact on MTN MoMo and African Fintech
Roper’s departure comes after a significant period of growth for MTN’s fintech arm. Joining MTN South Africa in May 2023, Roper spearheaded the relaunch of MoMo, introducing numerous enhancements to the platform. These improvements included the addition of new features such as insurance services, international remittance capabilities, PayShap integration, and a new point-of-sale device. Notably, under Roper’s leadership, MoMo expanded its international remittance services, enabling both foreign nationals in South Africa and local residents to send money to MoMo users across 12 African countries. MTN customers in these markets benefited from zero data charges when utilizing this service. This initiative highlights MoMo’s commitment to breaking down barriers to international money transfers within the African continent, a key aspect of mobile money’s impact on financial inclusion.
