Morocco Secures $3.7 Billion Deal to Elevate Airports, Bolster Aviation

Morocco is poised to significantly upgrade its aviation sector following a recently signed strategic agreement. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch spearheaded the deal with the National Airports Authority (ONDA), committing MAD 38 billion, equivalent to $3.7 billion, towards a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s airport infrastructure over the next five years. This substantial investment underscores Morocco’s dedication to strengthening its position as a key player in African aviation and expanding its economic influence.

Strategic Airport Upgrades and Expansion

The agreement’s core focus is on the expansion and modernization of pivotal airports across the country. Major improvements are planned for airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez. A key component of the initiative includes the construction of a brand-new international air terminal, strategically designed to function as a primary regional hub, thereby increasing connectivity for both business and leisure travelers. Alongside this, a new runway will be built at the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, ensuring the airport can accommodate future air traffic. These specific enhancements account for a significant portion of the investment, totaling MAD 25 billion ($2.5 billion). Furthermore, an additional MAD 13 billion ($1.3 billion) has been earmarked for essential maintenance, modernization efforts across the existing airport network, and land acquisition, all geared towards ensuring the long-term operability and sustainability of Morocco’s airports.

The investment promises to bring significant advancements for the country’s economy through improved travel and trade.
