Canal+ Completes $3 Billion Acquisition of MultiChoice, Reshaping African Media Landscape

In a landmark deal that will significantly impact the African media landscape, French media giant Canal+ has finalized its acquisition of MultiChoice Group, the parent company of popular platforms DStv and GoTV, for a staggering $3 billion. This acquisition, which has been in progress for several months, solidifies Canal+’s dominance in the African entertainment market, promising both opportunities and potential challenges for the continent’s media future.

Acquisition Details and Regulatory Approvals

This acquisition sees Canal+ gaining full ownership of MultiChoice. Previously, the French company held a 45% stake, leaving this recent deal to cover the remaining 55%. The South African Competition Tribunal played a key role in the process, providing its approval on July 23, 2025. However, this approval was granted with several conditions aimed at safeguarding local content creation and maintaining South Africa’s media sovereignty. The finalizing of the deal is slated for October 8, 2025. According to Maxime Saada, the CEO of Canal+, the consolidation of the two media giants is expected to result in “enhanced scale, greater exposure to high-growth markets, and the ability to deliver meaningful synergies.”

The acquisition has the potential to revolutionize the African media landscape by increasing content accessibility and offering a broader range of viewing options for consumers. The Competition Tribunal’s imposed conditions also represent a commitment to safeguarding the interests of African media stakeholders, ensuring the preservation and promotion of local talent and content.
