Sonelgaz Reports New Record Peak in Electricity Consumption

Algeria’s national electricity consumption has reached a new high, marking the eighth record peak this July. On Wednesday, Sonelgaz, through its subsidiary Sonelgaz-Transport d’électricité et Opérateur système, reported that the country’s electricity consumption hit 20,628 megawatts at 2:43 PM. This surge highlights the increasing demand for power amid a period of intense heat.

Factors Driving Increased Demand

Sonelgaz attributed this record peak to a significant increase in energy demand, primarily driven by the elevated temperatures and high humidity levels experienced across several regions of Algeria throughout July. The increased use of air conditioning and cooling systems to combat the heatwave has put a considerable strain on the national power grid. Sonelgaz emphasizes that teams within its various subsidiaries, particularly those involved in production, transmission, and distribution, are on high alert to maintain the stability of the national electrical system.

In response to this increased demand, Sonelgaz has deployed field intervention teams to address any emergencies. This action is part of the company’s broader preparation plan for the summer of 2025, aimed at ensuring a reliable and stable electricity supply during periods of peak demand. The company remains committed to meeting the energy needs of the Algerian population despite the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.
