Gokada, the popular Nigerian delivery and ride-hailing startup, is once again setting its sights on water transportation, signaling a renewed interest in its GBoat service. With new investment secured, the startup is aiming to capitalize on the growing need for alternative commuting options in the city.
GBoat’s Comeback: Timing and Strategy
Speaking with Technext, Gokada’s CEO, Fahim Saleh, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming launch of GBoat, describing the current environment as “perfect timing.” The company has acquired two new boats from China, indicating a significant investment in scaling the service. GBoat initially launched last year, earlier than the projected 2020 timeline, in partnership with Lagos Boats, a prominent private boat operator. This latest development follows a recent leadership change within the startup and a successful $5.3 million funding round from Rise Capital, signifying a strong commitment to growth and expansion. The startup, at launch, had three main jetties that served as its operational bases. This new initiative represents a crucial move for Gokada in tapping into the water transportation market, which addresses congestion challenges and offers an alternative commuting experience for Lagos residents.
The company seeks to launch its service very soon.
