SIM Swap Services Resume in Nigeria After NINAuth Integration
After a temporary pause of approximately three weeks, the SIM swap service in Nigeria is now fully operational. This restoration follows a technical upgrade on the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) platform. The pause had affected vital SIM-related functions, including activation, replacement, and authentication, impacting millions of mobile subscribers across the country. The NIMC, in an official statement released on Sunday, confirmed the resumption of services. This was also reiterated by telecommunications companies like MTN and Airtel. The services are now accessible through the subscribers’ respective Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), thanks to the integration with the National Identity Number Authentication (NINAuth) platform.
Enhanced Security and Seamless Verification
The NIMC highlighted that the transition to the NINAuth platform is designed to provide a more secure and streamlined identity verification process. This is a critical development for the Nigerian telecommunications landscape. The integration is a crucial step in bolstering the security measures surrounding mobile phone usage and data protection in Nigeria. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) had earlier indicated the temporary cessation of NIN-related services across major MNOs, namely Airtel, Glo, MTN and 9mobile, on July 2nd, which was due to the migration process. The restoration of the SIM swap service, facilitated by the upgraded platform, signals an improvement in the user experience, while enhancing the protection against SIM-related fraud and other security concerns.
