Empowering Nigerian Businesses: CAC’s New AI Ushers in a New Era

In Sango, Ogun State, Ayobami Sheriff, a typical informal business owner, opens his Point of Sale (PoS) kiosk, preparing for another day of transactions. He manages mobile banking, bill payments, airtime sales, and accessories – all vital services in his community. However, lacking a registered business name has hindered his access to crucial financial services like loans and business accounts. The high cost of registration, averaging ₦20,000 or more, coupled with uncertainty and a lack of digital literacy, have been major deterrents for entrepreneurs like Sheriff.

Navigating the Challenges of Business Registration in Nigeria

The process of registering a business in Nigeria has historically presented significant obstacles. The high cost and the prevalence of fraudulent practices have discouraged many entrepreneurs. Sheriff, echoing the sentiments of countless others, expressed his hesitations, highlighting the financial burden and the unreliable nature of some registration services. The absence of a registered business limits access to critical resources. For instance, businesses cannot access funding from formal financial institutions or open dedicated business accounts. This impacts their growth potential and limits their ability to scale. The lack of digital know-how also creates additional barriers. The introduction of the Corporate Affairs Commission’s (CAC’s) new AI technology seeks to address these problems.

Concluding his day at his PoS kiosk, Sheriff faces the persistent challenge of operating without formal registration. The cost, uncertainty, and lack of digital familiarity have so far kept him from formalizing his business. The CAC’s new AI is expected to help people in this space.
