Electricity Consumption Hits New Peak, Sonelgaz Responds
Algeria’s national electricity consumption reached a new peak on Sunday, hitting 20,248 megawatts at 2:46 PM, according to Sonelgaz, the country’s national electricity and gas company, specifically its electricity transmission and system operator subsidiary. This marks the sixth peak consumption event this month. This increase highlights the ongoing challenges of meeting energy demands during periods of high temperatures, a common trend across the African continent.
Factors Driving Increased Demand and Sonelgaz’s Response
The recent surge in electricity consumption is attributed to a significant rise in temperatures across multiple regions in Algeria, particularly in coastal areas and inland regions. These areas are also experiencing increased humidity, further contributing to the heightened demand for electricity, likely driven by the use of air conditioning and other cooling technologies. In response, Sonelgaz emphasized its commitment to maintaining service quality and ensuring its continuity. The company stated that its teams are actively working to manage these challenges, demonstrating the “level of preparedness and professionalism on the ground, the effectiveness of the action plan developed by Sonelgaz for the summer of 2025 and the importance of the major investments made to strengthen the national grid.”
The latest peak in consumption underlines the challenges faced by utilities across Africa in meeting growing energy needs. Sonelgaz’s efforts highlight the importance of proactive planning and investment in infrastructure to manage fluctuations in demand, especially during extreme weather conditions common in many African nations.
