#CodeLagos: Over 337 Schools to Participate in the Lagos State Code Week Competition

Lagos State is set to launch a landmark event in its educational calendar, as over 337 public and private schools gear up for the highly anticipated Lagos State Code Week Competition. This pivotal four-day competition, a cornerstone of the broader CodeLagos initiative, is scheduled to kick off on Monday, June 25, 2018. The event will see students from across all six of the state’s Educational Districts competing, demonstrating a significant commitment from the state government to integrate crucial digital literacy and technology skills into the core of its education system. This widespread participation underscores the program’s ambition to create a tech-savvy generation from an early age.

Fostering a New Generation of Tech Innovators

According to Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, the competition was meticulously designed to expose students to the dynamic world of computer programming. The primary objective is to move beyond theoretical knowledge and help participants develop tangible coding skills that are essential in the 21st-century economy. The event serves as a strategic platform to encourage the much-needed adoption of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) principles within the standard school curriculum. This focus is part of a larger vision, responding to a mandate from the Governor to fundamentally raise ICT standards across Lagos State schools and prepare students for the demands of the global digital landscape.

The Lagos State Code Week Competition is a clear signal of the state’s dedication to building a robust technological future. By investing in foundational skills like coding, the CodeLagos program is not merely running a contest but is actively cultivating the next wave of innovators and problem-solvers for Nigeria and the African continent. This proactive, government-led approach to technology education is critical for developing a sustainable talent pipeline, ensuring that Lagos’s youth are well-equipped to lead and thrive in an increasingly tech-driven world. The initiative promises to elevate the standard of ICT education and solidify Lagos’s position as a central hub for African tech.
