15 Chinese Nationals Face Deportation After Cybercrime Convictions in Nigeria

A recent crackdown on cybercrime in Nigeria has resulted in the conviction and sentencing of fifteen Chinese nationals. The Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the verdicts, marking a significant development in the country’s efforts to combat internet fraud and cyber terrorism. This action, spearheaded by Nigerian security agencies, signals a strong stance against illicit online activities.

Cybercrime Charges and Legal Proceedings

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced that the individuals were brought before Justice Ayokunle Faji and Justice Dehinde Dipeolu at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. They faced separate charges related to cyber-terrorism and internet fraud, violating the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended 2024) and the Terrorism (Prevention, Prohibition) Act. The convicted individuals are Ling Yang, Xiao Hong Will, Wang Zheng Ming, Wang Jia Qi, Yang Sheng, Peng Sen Lin, Guo Xiao Fei, Chen An Shun, Peng Sen Lin, Zhao Ying Bin, Yu Zi aka Wei Xue Huan, Zhang Yang, Wang Zhi Cheng, Yang Sheng and Lu Yubo. Following their conviction, the fifteen Chinese nationals will be deported from Nigeria.

This case underscores Nigeria’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and its willingness to hold individuals accountable, regardless of nationality. It also highlights the ongoing challenges posed by cyber threats and the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation in combating these crimes, particularly within the African tech landscape.
