Satellite, Fibre and Masts: What Wins Africa’s Last Mile?

Africa’s digital transformation is underway, but connecting its 1.4 billion people presents significant hurdles. The challenge lies in delivering internet access across vast rural areas hampered by low population density and underdeveloped infrastructure. Overcoming the “last mile” – the final stretch of connectivity to the end user – is the key. Satellite technology, fibre-optic cables, and mobile masts are the primary contenders in this race, each offering unique advantages and disadvantages. The question is, which technology will ultimately dominate and bridge the digital divide?

The Connectivity Conundrum

Africa lags behind the rest of the world in internet adoption. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), only 38% of the African population was online in 2024, compared to a global average of 68%. This disparity is further highlighted by the fact that over 200 million Africans lack even basic 3G coverage. Rural communities are particularly underserved, with less than 3% having access to traditional telephone lines. While urban areas experience better connectivity, access can still be slow and expensive. The last mile is therefore a critical factor in determining the quality and accessibility of internet services across the continent.

The race to connect Africa is complex, but overcoming the last mile challenge is paramount. The ultimate winner will likely be a hybrid approach, leveraging the strengths of each technology to create a robust and accessible digital landscape for all Africans.
