Senate Confirms Aminu Maida as New NCC Executive Vice Chairman

In a significant development for Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, the Senate has officially confirmed Dr. Aminu Maida as the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This confirmation follows President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Dr. Maida last month and subsequently replaces the previous EVC, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, as part of a broader restructuring within key agencies under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy.

Confirmation Process and Committee Report

The Senate’s decision came after a thorough screening process conducted by the Senate Committee on Communications. Senator Ikra Aliyu Bilbis, the Chairman of the Committee and a former Minister of Communications, presented the committee’s report during the plenary session. He urged the Senate to approve President Tinubu’s request, emphasizing Maida’s suitability for the crucial role of the country’s Chief Telecom Regulator. The report highlighted the Committee’s positive assessment of Dr. Maida’s qualifications and experience after his screening on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.

With his confirmation, Dr. Maida is now poised to lead the NCC and steer the direction of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. His appointment comes at a pivotal time as the country seeks to further develop its digital economy and enhance connectivity for its citizens. The industry will be watching closely to see the impact of his leadership on key areas such as broadband penetration, spectrum management, and consumer protection.
