EOCO Gains Forensic Crypto License, Recovers Fraud Proceeds in Ghana

Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has significantly bolstered its capacity to combat financial crime with the acquisition of a forensic cryptocurrency investigation license, one of the few in West Africa. This strategic move allows the agency to effectively track, investigate, and prosecute crimes involving digital currencies, ensuring criminals are stripped of their ill-gotten gains.

# Cracking Down on Crypto Fraud

EOCO Executive Director Raymond Archer announced the groundbreaking achievement at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, during the launch of a partnership between EOCO and QNET, aimed at tackling organised crime. Archer emphasized that the new license empowers EOCO to not only detect and investigate crypto-related offenses but also to successfully prosecute perpetrators and recover stolen assets. He highlighted the increasing reliance on technology by criminals to mask illicit funds, stressing the importance of EOCO’s enhanced capabilities in staying ahead of these evolving threats. The agency has already successfully utilized its new forensic license to recover proceeds from cryptocurrency fraud cases.

This development signifies a major step forward for Ghana in addressing the growing challenges posed by digital financial crimes. EOCO’s ability to effectively investigate and recover assets in the cryptocurrency space sends a strong message to criminals and reinforces the country’s commitment to maintaining financial integrity in the digital age.
