NRF and UNESCO Unite to Boost Science and Tech Innovation in the Global South

The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa and the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC) have solidified a partnership designed to strengthen scientific collaboration and innovation across the Global South. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially signed, paving the way for deeper cooperation in science, technology, and innovation (STI).

Strengthening South-South Cooperation in STI

The signing ceremony, held in Kuala Lumpur, was a significant event attended by high-ranking officials, researchers, and partners from both South Africa and other nations. Dr. Nare Prudence Makhura, representing the NRF, and Professor Dr. Mohd Basyaruddin Abd Rahman, Chair of ISTIC’s Governing Board, formalized the agreement. This strategic alliance focuses on promoting collaborative research initiatives, particularly those aimed at bolstering the skills and expertise of emerging researchers in developing nations. This partnership highlights the importance of South-South cooperation in addressing global challenges through scientific advancement and technological innovation, particularly relevant in fostering African tech and research capabilities.

This MoU represents a commitment to fostering a more connected and innovative scientific community across the Global South. By combining the resources and expertise of the NRF and ISTIC, this partnership promises to accelerate scientific discovery and technological development, ultimately contributing to sustainable solutions for challenges faced by developing nations.
