Glo’s Subscriber Exodus: A Chance for 9mobile to Rebound?
Recent data reveals a significant shift in Nigeria’s mobile internet landscape. Globacom (Glo) experienced a substantial loss of over 3.2 million internet subscribers between December 2024 and May 2025, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This decline represents the largest subscriber drop among the country’s major mobile network operators during that period, potentially opening a door for competitors to capitalize.
9mobile’s Opportunity for Growth
The NCC data shows Glo’s internet subscriber base plummeted from 17.1 million to 13.9 million in just six months, averaging a loss of over 21,000 users daily. This drop effectively returns Glo’s subscriber numbers to levels seen back in November 2013. While this represents a setback for Glo, it simultaneously presents a valuable opportunity for 9mobile, the smallest mobile network operator in Nigeria by user count, to revitalize its position. Currently holding only 1.4 million subscribers, representing less than 1.5% of the internet market, 9mobile could leverage this situation to close the gap of nearly 10 million users. By focusing on enhanced service offerings and strategic marketing initiatives, 9mobile could potentially gain between 250,000 and 300,000 users monthly, leading to a significant improvement in its market share within the next three years.
Glo’s substantial subscriber loss creates a strategic opening for 9mobile to aggressively pursue growth. While challenges remain, a focused approach on customer acquisition and retention could help 9mobile capitalize on this shifting market dynamic and establish a stronger foothold in Nigeria’s competitive mobile internet arena.
