In the telecommunications sector, South Africa initially mandated that companies, particularly foreign entities, relinquish 30% ownership of their local operations to comply with BEE. However, recognizing the potential disruption, an alternative pathway was introduced. Instead of ceding ownership, companies could invest significantly in the South African economy, creating opportunities for local communities and businesses. MTN, a leading South African telecom, embraced this alternative through its Zakhele Futhi (MTNZF) Fund, established in 2016. This initiative enabled South Africans to acquire shares in MTN. Now, almost a decade later, the scheme is concluding and dispensing payouts.
