MTN Zakhele Futhi Set to Begin Investor Payouts After Nine Years, Signalling a Milestone for BEE Investment

After a waiting period of nearly nine years, MTN Zakhele Futhi (MTNZF), a pivotal Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) investment scheme, is poised to commence the distribution of returns to its shareholders. The scheme announced that these long-awaited payouts will begin on July 28, 2025. While investors are guaranteed to receive their full initial capital back, the scheme has indicated that the overall gains will be modest.

Unpacking the Returns and the Vision Behind MTNZF

Shareholders in the MTNZF scheme can anticipate an initial payment of R20 per share. This will be followed by a subsequent distribution of R2 to R3 per share, bringing the total expected return to between R22 and R23 per share. This consolidated figure represents a complete recovery of the original investment amount for shareholders, alongside a modest profit, solidifying the scheme’s commitment. Launched in September 2016, MTN Zakhele Futhi was strategically designed to broaden economic participation and ownership among Black South Africans, encompassing both individual investors and Black-owned corporate entities. A key aspect of its structure was the support from external funding, which significantly expanded the scope of participation beyond what individual contributions alone could have achieved. At the time of its public offering, cash applicants were required to purchase a minimum of 100 shares, which amounted to an initial investment of R2,000.

This forthcoming distribution marks a significant moment for the thousands of investors who put their faith in the MTNZF initiative. It not only fulfills the promise of capital return but also underscores the long-term commitment of such BEE schemes to foster economic inclusion and wealth creation within South Africa’s diverse population. The modest but positive returns, after nearly a decade, highlight the complexities and patience often required in large-scale empowerment investment vehicles in the African tech and telecommunications landscape.
